Everyone has their own system when it comes to mopping up a spilled mug of hot chocolate on the impractical, but beautiful ecru carpeting. Maybe they begin by dispensing half a roll of paper towels to absorb the excess liquid, then apply the carpet cleaner of choice, dab ferociously, and so on. Problem solved perhaps, but often the manual scrubbing actually pushes filth deeper into the carpet, further embedding it. Even if the chocolate color has been eradicated, the unpleasant aroma of spoiled milk may still arise. To fully eliminate stains, Bissell created their clever SpotLifter 2X carpet cleaner. The 9.6v cleaner uses a combination of aggressive brush agitation and powerful suction to actually lift spots up and out of the carpet. Ideal for attacking fresh spills or unsightly pet accidents, the handheld vacuum leaves the carpet looking as if Coco never left her owners a stinky present there.
To use the SpotLifter 2X, users fill the cleaner's back tank with cleaning formula and clean water. After spraying the soiled area, apply the deluxe brush to the area and switch the power button on. The brush begins to scrub at the carpet while the suction lifts debris and dirty water up into the front collection tank. The cleaner covers a 7-inch path. After the carpet has been thoroughly cleaned, a release button enables easy collection tank removal for disposal and a quick rinse out. The SpotLifter 2X is a cordless cleaning tool for convenient transportation. The batteries must be charged for 24 hours before the cleaner's first use. After use, the cleaner will best operate after fully recharging over 12 hours. The cleaner runs at full power for approximately 15 minutes per use. This item is covered by a one-year limited warranty. The cleaner measures 17-3/4 by 7 by 10 inches and weighs 6 pounds. --Jessica Reuling

My main concern was that the smaller cleaner wouldn't do as good of a job as the large stand-up we have, but it is just as good, no question. It has excellent suction and the brush it comes with really works. For normal cat spots on the carpet it's just fine. It hasn't worked well on tomato sauce or really liquidy cat spots (yuck), but I have to tell you the stand-up unit didn't work on those spots either! You'll need to use some cleaner that soaks overnight and elbow grease for the really tricky stains.
It's better than the stand-up cleaner because it's much easier to clean out when we're done -- our large unit gets all kinds of nasty inside the tank and there's no way to take it apart to clean it. Yuck! The Bissell however can easily be cleaned out using running water, and the brush is detachable and cleans up well. The Bissell is also better than the stand-up unit with a wand because it is smaller, less noisy, and there is no cord to get in the way. The charge lasts a good long time. Just last night we used it for nearly 15 minutes with hardly any loss of power.
We don't exactly use it the way the instructions say, though, so I feel for accuracy I should explain what we do: We use the cleaner (and we really like the Little Green it came with) in a spray bottle, diluted per instructions. We fill the tank on the back with hot water only. We then spray the spot on the carpet with hot water from the SpotLifter, spray with the diluted cleaner, let sit for a minute, then then use the Bissell SpotLifter to spray hot water on it again and suck up the solution from the carpet. It works great!
My only complaints (if you could call them that) are that the return tank doesn't hold much, and when it gets too full it sometimes splashes out some of the dirty water from the side vents. Once you realize that's what's going on you can control it, but it is a little annoying. Also, the spray from the tank occasionally gets blocked by bubbles or something and it won't spray when you first start the machine.
This is one of the best products we've purchased in a long time. I highly recommend it.
Update: As of March, 2011, we're still using this cleaner and it still works well. After 2 years of use, the tank is pretty dirty inside and it's difficult to clean. I've soaked it in hot water with bleach and with detergent, but there is still grime collecting in the harder to reach spots in the tank. The best way to get rid of these spots is to get a little hot water in there and tilt the tank until the water sits on those grimy spots, then shake vigorously. It knocks some of it loose. So far the battery is still working, although it does not hold a charge as long as it used to, which is understandable. I've found running the battery down (but not all the way) helps in the charge. For the price, this has been a terrific purchase.
Our reason for getting these two appliances is our “urpy” cat. (We’ve threatened to change his name to “Wyatt Earp” :->) It was either spend a few dollars here or re-do the floors in wood.
Our carpets are professionally cleaned every couple of years. Then we use these two small appliances in the interim.
We definitely agree with other reviewers: the cleaning solutions are amazing even on old stains.
The Spotlifter is nice and small and stored in our laundry room with only water in the reservoir. Since “Wyatt” has a knack for getting sick just as we’re heading out the door, this gives us a chance to grab-and-go. We don’t use cleaning solution unless the ‘spill’ is very bad, because the scrubbing pad on this one comes off too easily to scrub. We find the Spotlifter to be just that … something to lift quickly and be on our way. (Also, it’s small enough you can do this and then leave it at the spot as a marker to return to. Then see if you need to do more with the SpotClean.)
We like the Spotlifter, but I found it difficult to remove the collections tank. It’s very wide for my hand and you must press a button while lifting it off. Hubby can do it. I cannot. [EDIT TO THE PREVIOUS STATEMENTS, JANUARY 22, 2016: I found a way to easily remove the collections tank: grab the "lip" at the bottom front at the same time you depress the button at the top of the tank. Pull at the 'lip.' A cinch!] The water/solution tank is very easy to fill (but a little difficult for me to pull off ... wide for my hand). Don’t be fooled by the end of the tube being out of the water. This tank feeds from the bottom. I think the tube is there simply to equalize pressure.
When there’s a big mess and we must scrub, we use the SpotClean. It is very easy to put together and use. We found it difficult to remove the float stack (the big grey ‘tube’) inside the dirty water tank, although it is suggested you do so to empty water quickly. It’s hard only because it’s in there so tightly to get a proper seal. Getting it back in place to marry up with the holes on the main appliance was also difficult. Both tanks have a smaller hole you can use to dump, but it takes a while for it all to dry out. We don’t put the unit back together, for storage, until it’s totally dry. The instructions don’t say to do that, so I suppose you could put it away wet.
By the way, these are both amazingly quiet. However, when we're cleaning the SpotClean – and it's on a counter instead of the carpet - I use earplugs! During normal use (and sitting on the carpet), there’s no problem.
