It may be the most outrageous property in New Jersey, and it is hitting the auction block this Friday.
Except much of the outrageousness will be not be included in the sale price.
Located at 5848 Route 9 in Bass River, the property is widely recognized as a wonderland of kitsch. Stuffed inside of a 54-acre compound is a collection of sculptures and oddities, ranging from life-like elephants to a Roman solider to vintage World War II planes to various Buddha statues.
There's also a Statue of Liberty replica, cannons littered throughout and a sailing galleon on the surrounding wall that reads, "Please drive carefully."
It's an ironic message for those driving past the property -- it is nearly impossible to keep your eyes on the road as you try to find out what the hell is going on inside the compound.
Unfortunately, if you want to keep any of those items -- or the frightening clown head, or the golden bull, or the replica helicopter -- you're out of luck. Byung Taek Kim, the owner and the chairman of the Taekwondo Association of Greater New York, will be taking the home's various kitsch and arcana with him once the property is auctioned off, according to Kerry Goldberg, a spokeswoman for Maltz Auction, which is conducting the auction.
Kim bought the property in 2010 "in order to remodel it into a summer shore retreat and private family fun park for his family," Richard Maltz, president of Maltz Auction, said in a press release.
And during the remodeling of the property, Kim did it all off the cuff.
"This is his art project, basically,'' broker associate Valerie Vargas told NJ Advance Media in August 2016.
"He comes up with the ideas; there are no drawings,'' Uriel Marquina, a worker for Kim, said then.
"He'll say, 'I want to put an airplane out front,'" Adalid Marquina added. "We look for places to find (materials to build it).''
What is actually being auctioned off on Friday is the 10,000-square-foot main residence, a caretaker house with two apartments, a lighted tennis court, two private stocked ponds, a greenhouse and a 1 million-gallon pool (along with the three-story watchtower and footbridge that surrounds said pool).
The auction will be held at the property 5847 Route 9, Bass River at 2 p.m. For those interested, the suggested opening bid is $450,000. The property was previosuly on the market for $3.25 million.
In order to register to bid, all prospective bidders must present a cashier's check in the amount of $45,000 made payable to "Maltz Auctions, Inc."
Kerry Goldberg, a spokeswoman for Maltz Auction, emphasized that this is not a bankruptcy auction. She said that Kim needs to move soon, and an auction is the best option to quickly sell a property of this magnitude and value.
Goldberg said there has been a "healthy interest" in the home.
As for all of the wonderful weirdness, when Kim was trying to sell the home in 2016, a property fact sheet stated, "This art can stay with the property or be removed should one request."
This time, though, the artwork is not included. Goldberg said she did not know what Kim's plans are for the life-size T-Rex -- or the giant squawking dragon, or the "Transformers"-like robot -- currently on site.
