Target Corp. said Friday that it plans to open a small-format store in the Saltillo mixed-use development under construction in East Austin.

The store, slated for 901 E. Fifth St., is expected to open next year, a Target spokeswoman said.

Documents filed with the city indicate the store will have 24,771 square feet. A typical Target store is about 80,000 to 100,000 square feet.

According to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, construction is due to start in September on the store, which has an estimated cost of $2 million.

Saltillo is a 10-acre mixed-use development being built between East Fourth and East Fifth streets, just east of downtown. Initially known as Plaza Saltillo, the project was rebranded in 2017 simply as Saltillo. It is being developed by Austin-based Endeavor Real Estate Group.

Scheduled to open this summer, Saltillo will have a seven-story office tower, which has been leased by Google, along with 800 apartments, a Whole Foods Market grocery, retail space and restaurants that will include Hopdoddy Burger Bar and Chuy’s Tex-Mex.

Target previously opened a small-format, 22,000 square-feet store in 2017 in the Dobie Twenty21 development at 2021 Guadalupe St., near the University of Texas campus. Focused on college students, the store sells an assortment of groceries, dorm and apartment essentials, technology products and accessories, men’s and women’s clothing, and health and beauty items.

While declining to comment about the Target store, Endeavor Principal Jason Thumlert said Endeavor is "incredibly pleased such a wide-ranging list of tenants will be a part of Saltillo. Our goal from the onset has been for this project to serve the community well, and a healthy mix of tenants accomplishes just that.”

Based in Minneapolis, Target Corp. operates about 1,850 stores in the United States and has 350,000 employees worldwide. The company had revenue of about $75 billion for its most recent full fiscal year.
